Group Blogs – #blogchat recap and transcript – 07/11/10

#blogchat this week was co-hosted by the marvelous Ann Handley (@marketingprofs on Twitter). Ann is the Chief Content Officer at MarketingProfs and was on #blogchat to talk about starting and managing a group blog.

Company blogs:

One of the great topics of conversations at the beginning of the chat was how to get more involvement by others in corporate blogs. Ann said, “Group vs. single: Group rock for incorporating lots of voices from within a single co., or for aggregating voices outside of it.” There were great suggestions about having an editorial calendar and also someone responsible as an editor to make sure that spelling / grammar are correct. On the topic of editorial calendars, Ann suggested “I think it’s important to maintain an overall editorial calendar/publishing sked. But it depends on the kind of blog.” There was some debate over whether or not everyone participating in a group blog needed to have the same “voice” or if individual bloggers should be encouraged to have their own voice. One company she suggested as doing a great job in this area was Kodak.

Other great tweets:

  • @timjahn: Q1: I think multiple authors help showcase the various personalities that work at a company. #blogchat
  • @BillBoorman: When anyone can contribute they get a much greater sense of belonging #blogchat
  • @fearlesscomp: IMHO A company probably should have a group blog. Better to get frequent updates. #blogchat
  • @NicWirtz: #blogchat If wildcards are spoiling your company voice, don’t be afraid of using whatever editorial measures you see fit.
  • @HomeschoolSue: Good advice! – RT @RLMadMan: 1 lesson to learn from @marketingprofs – promote each contributor equally & in the same way…. #blogchat

There were a few dissenting voices about companies having blogs. HoodedMan said, “A blog should be independent. That leaves corporations and their shills out… “

“Social Prospecting”:

During the chat, Ann mentioned a phrase called “social prospecting”. She said, “Cultivating community: By IDing people who are active. One of my best tactics is to lurk in the comments, see who’s already there.” She also said, “Social prospecting can clue you onto motivated contributor who have great energy/passion.”

Other great tweets:

  • @MarketingProfs: @MackCollier Absolutely. I used to find good writers on email lists; social media makes it a LOT easier. Read blogs/Twitter. #blogchat
  • @MarketingProfs: @jesseluna Other tips on social prospecting: Check out your industry on SlideShare. A rich source of contributors/ideas. #blogchat
  • @MarketingProfs: @CarrieOliver @Jon_Lewis Re social prospecting: Mining for potential contributors to your blog on various social platforms. #blogchat

Not just a blogger …

Ann made a great point that in addition to being willing to write posts, participants in the blog needed to also be willing to participate in the community. Ann said, “Being part of the community there. Commenting, commenting back, saying thank you. Simple.” and “Toughest thing = Helping people understand that giving back to a blog is as important as just writing for it. “

Other great tweets:

  • @MarketingProfs: @ICT_GURU Tons of people want to write for the blog. Fewer really want to be part of the community. #blogchat

There was a ton more shared during the evening and the transcript can be found below.

  • Ribeezie: .@MarketingProfs how do you arrive at establishing a balance for frequency in posting? #blogchat How much is too much?

  • TheJoyOfBirth: @lttsnyder Thanks it’s getting good already. #blogchat

  • danperezfilms: @Nicholas_Cardot I think I’ll know what the company wants me to know about them but at least I can decide for myself. #blogchat
  • Sue_Anne: @Nicholas_Cardot That’s why it’s good to have an editorial calendar in place first to mitigate any hard feelings #blogchat

  • LiteraryNobody: @TheJoyOfBirth Hey Lady 😉 #blogchat

  • trainingfactor: more bloggers simply = SEO and credibility if content is cool #blogchat
  • LauraMattis: We have 1 editor, very helpful since mult authors RT @lttsnyder: RT @mollienothnagel: Challenges w/inconsistent voices n grp blog? #blogchat
  • shelleyryan: What about “outside” bloggers contributing to a small co’s blog? I’ve been invited to do that 4x now. Any rules? #blogchat
  • Ribeezie: .@marketingprofs does it depend on traffic? Number of subscribers? (Relevance is important of course). #blogchat
  • Scribnia: @aliciamarie112 @nicholas_cardot I am, but I’m sure many are at least in the position to influence the decision maker. #blogchat
  • MarkDykeman: @BillBoorman I see Ning as different because you normally need an account to participate in Ning: blogs are usually more public #blogchat
  • BillBoorman: @HoodedMan Nearly every blog written is corporate IMO. We are all promoting somthing #blogchat
  • timjahn: @HoodedMan That’s a good point. I feel like most corporate blogs are just press releases. #blogchat

  • KaufmanwithAK: #blogchat As long as you have consistent format, multiple authors is great. Just make sure to have a robust “about us” to delineate.
  • CurtMonash: #blogchat I often advise IT vendors to have group corporate blogs. Different busy people can contribute different kinds of posts.
  • RickCaffeinated: Agree w/ @Scribnia re:sweet spot, balance between num of writers, amt of content, would add being able to have great engagement #blogchat

  • RBeale: @dscweb Financially incent the bloggers #blogchat 🙂
  • MaryAnnHalford: @JDEbberly the tweets are insane!!! #Blogchat

  • AtlantaPR: @BlogLuvr29 Thanks Jason. It is nce to be back on #blogchat. I’ve been gone too long!
  • LiteraryNobody: @fearlesscomp That is sad…it amazes me that comapnies don’t realize the potential they could have through their blogs #blogchat
  • pushingsocial: @ianmrountree – #1 decide problems to solve, #2 identify perspectives to offer, #3 assign perspectives to the champion in the org #blogchat
  • jb140: @ianmrountree I’d say first & foremost you need to have a writing strategy of what keywords you want to use if for in SEO #blogchat
  • sherrylowry: @ianmrountree terrific question and challenge – what 3 steps to take first before a group blog launch #blogchat

  • zkellyq: @TMichaelRogers True. Using Google docs/sharing now. Just wanted more functionality and integration. #blogchat
  • jesseluna: At previous company, I was the blog editor and helped “corral” a few posts. Sometimes hard to do when it’s an Exec. #blogchat

  • RickCaffeinated: Q for @justprecious @hoodedman #blogchat – do you not read company blogs as a rule? Or because the ones you’ve found suck?
  • BillBoorman: The editor should be there for look and spell checking rather than content control IMO #blogchat
  • JoeHage: The executive suite rarely has the time AND interest to consistently contribute to blog, @MarkDykerman. No examples. #blogchat
  • LauraMattis: Um, yeah! RT @MaryAnnHalford: @JDEbberly the tweets are insane!!! #blogchat
  • sherrylowry: Yeah for editorial calendar advocates! #blogchat

  • AtlantaPR: @getsweetie totally agree. Different voices make the blog more interesting. #blogchat
  • mollienothnagel: @GetSweetie Yes, good point! #blogchat
  • fontanians: @kwjudd I don’t think so, as long as their is an editor to keep the blog’s “voice” consistent #blogchat
  • SarahNelson_: @LauraMattis @colleenpence Agree editorial calendar is a must! Here’s a template for those that need it http://bit.ly/aPmqIe #blogchat

  • dscweb: @RBeale Good point. Financially incent them or incent them in other ways. Anybody have success with non-monetary incentives? #BlogChat
  • J_Fuji: @Scribnia That’s a fair point! I just wonder if keeping up a high publishing rate can impact your ability to provide quality. #blogchat
  • greenlandlady: @trainingfactor Isn’t MFI a group blog? #blogchat
  • HoodedMan: A group blog usually have a moderator of a kind, which makes it a big no no to me #blogchat
  • colleenpence: Best to have a managing editor of a group blog – they help group create ed. calendar and keep up w/ deadlines. #blogchat
  • MackCollier: BTW you can read @marketingprofs group blog here – http://www.mpdailyfix.com/ #blogchat
  • thehoneyb: But content control can keep the blog within the niche. RT @BillBoorman: The editor should be there for look and spell checking… #blogchat
  • pushingsocial: By the way – more tweets from 9-10pm – Hanging out in #blogchat come on over – the water’s great
  • Scribnia: Check the @sofresh blog for a good example of a group blog, consisting of “outside” contributors. #blogchat

  • ICT_GURU: @AtlantaPR Do those companies find it hard to stick to the general themes of the blog with multiple writers? #blogchat
  • jesseluna: @BillBoorman I don’t think the editor should completely control things, but should help keep the main goals. #blogchat
  • mshahab: @georgiacast @sharifwrites @literarynobody @sue_anne exactly! not all employees are cut out to contribute to a company blog #blogchat
  • pheffernanvt: @ianmrountree 1. platform/blog description 2. agree on categories/topics per blogger, 3. editorial calendar with schedule, process #blogchat
  • hacool: @ianmrountree 1) Develop an editorial policy (topic/niche), 2) Writing guidelines (style/tone/rules) 3) Choose contributors… #blogchat
  • LiteraryNobody: @icebluebanana Same to you 🙂 #blogchat
  • Scribnia: @j_fuji it definitely can, and that’s the balance that you have to find. #blogchat
  • jb140: @J_Fuji so many times people sacrifice the quality just to push out more quantity & you end up shooting yourself in the foot #blogchat
  • MackCollier: @marketingprofs what was the most unexpected thing about launching Daily Fix? Good and bad? #blogchat
  • colleenpence: @SarahNelson_ Awesome editorial calendar template for blogging/Twitter/FB. Thanks for sharing. #blogchat

  • paulylacosta: Can’t believe I made it! Hope I can find some interesting tweeps to follow tonight… #blogchat
  • eljadaae: Example of great group blog: http://ow.ly/29Xs5 And here’s how they do it: http://ow.ly/29Xtt #blogchat

  • sherrylowry: good examples of editorial calendars? #blogchat
  • scullyano: How do you all feel about editing the grammar/spelling of a guest post to a group blog? Is that “okay?” #blogchat #blogchat

  • JDEbberly: I think Blogchat just borrowed one of the Borg’s transwarp conduits tonight lol #Blogchat
  • vunty: I write on my blog vunty.com. I’m going to be a college student in the fall. Benefit of a group blog: consistent content. #blogchat
  • BlogLuvr29: If your have multiple authors make sure you have a complete list of authors on the blog. #blogchat
  • CBWhittemore: My sites #blogchat: http://bit.ly/bKuwcD and http://www.simplemarketingblog.com
  • MarketingProfs: Re “voice”: That’s one of those squishy, amorphous things that scares people away. I’d rather blog with passion vs. perfection. #blogchat
  • chrisyates11: Team needs fixing not message RT @mshahab: Multiple authors can dilute the company’s voice/personality if not in some unison #blogchat
  • RLMadMan: Top 3 steps before launching any blog, regardless of circumstances: plan, plan, plan. @IanMRountree #blogchat
  • TheJoyOfBirth: When working it’s hard sometimes for one person to keep up with a blog because they get busy with so many other tasks. #blogchat
  • fontanians: @dscweb Why not? #blogchat
  • trainingfactor: @greenlandlady technically, but its an open forum as opposed to a corporate structure #blogchat
  • RLMadMan: @HoodedMan Defying censoring can be good, but a corporate plan defines how to do that in a beneficial manner. #blogchat
  • RickCaffeinated: @jb140 agreed, but there are some, either single or group authors, that stay on message, bring something positive to the mix #blogchat
  • MaryAnnHalford: @JDEbberly you are so cool that you could link to that video so quickly http://youtu.be/fL8nnMpV2Eo – we are moving FAST! #Blogchat
  • pheffernanvt: @LiteraryNobody MarketingProfs, Mashable not very good? #blogchat
  • justprecious: @RickCaffeinated not a rule, per se. more because I don’t have the interest or time. I’d rather read outsider’s feedback #blogchat
  • colleenpence: @scullyano editing of grammar/spelling of a group blog is imperative for professional appearance. #blogchat
  • jb140: @scullyano when I moderated a group blog I made it clear from the beginning that I would be editing all content before publishing #blogchat
  • JudyHelfand: @scullyano you must edit for grammar/spelling people will care about the quality not whether you have a guest poster #blogchat
  • fontanians: @TheJoyOfBirth Maybe the solution is to have a dedicated blogger if the company is serious abt socmed? #blogchat
  • CurtMonash: #blogchat Group blogs that work pretty well (TechCrunch) still aren’t as good as best writer. But that doesn’t prove group blogs pointless.
  • colleenpence: Different points of view on a group blog = great. Inconsistent and incorrect grammar spelling = not. #blogchat
  • AtlantaPR: For multiple author blogs, make sure each post has the authors name on it #blogchat
  • Partyaficionado: Here is an example of a group blog/soap opera for pet bloggers http://ow.ly/29XtZ Can you tell it’s multiple bloggers? #blogchat
  • aliciamarie112: I blog at www.makingtimeformommy.com & contribute to www.ChicagoNow.com , www.seedsoffaithwomen.com , and www.inexpensively.com #blogchat
  • thehoneyb: I do, but I’m a typo nazi and I warn them! lol RT @scullyano: How do you all feel abt editing grammar/spelling of a guest post #blogchat
  • dscweb: I write for a voluntary group blog. Tried mandatory blog posts, and it didn’t work #BlogChat
  • BillBoorman: Maybe I confuse group blog with community blog #blogchat
  • LiteraryNobody: My intro: My blog is Tales of a literary Nobody http://bit.ly/90S5GG #blogchat
  • robpetersen: Q1. A brief description on the blogger and their role in the co. is an intro and it shows human values of the co. #blogchat
  • pushingsocial: Thx @colleenpence Newsroom model allows for “beat bloggers”, editor, and tight editorial schedule #blogchat
  • HoodedMan: True freedom of expression http://bit.ly/daZV4N #blogchat
  • LauraMattis: @dscweb ours is voluntary as well, but of course we do everything possible to persuade everyone to participate. 😉 So far, working #blogchat
  • CheeselessMom: @LiteraryNobody @HoodedManI follow a handful of group blogs that are extremely successful and have a huge presence online. #blogchat
  • sherrylowry: @MarketingProfs you give a lot of permission to write in a way we’re passionate about – that’s helpful #blogchat
  • JDEbberly: @MaryAnnHalford I am a REAL Star Trek junkie – I have SO MANY links about Star Trek it’s unbelievable! #Blogchat
  • georgiacast: @mollienothnagel I think inconsistency in voice is ok as long the content doesn’t stray from the msg the company wants to convey #blogchat
  • icebluebanana: @MShahab @georgiacast @sharifwrites @literarynobody @sue_anne IMO not many employees should contribute to a company blog #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: @TobyDiva I think it’s important to maintain an overall editorial calendar/publishing sked. But it depends on the kind of blog. #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: @TobyDiva In other words, if you are relying on colleagues, you might suggest a certain # of posts per mo, if you can. #blogchat
  • greenlandlady: @trainingfactor Thx $ clarifying. Obvious newbiness showing thru. #blogchat
  • joey_strawn: Couldn’t agree more, whether there is 1 author or multiple, it comes down to passion. Voice may differ, but passion must remain. #blogchat
  • Scribnia: Group blogs should also give each writer their own page with a bio and list of posts they’ve written. #blogchat
  • mshahab: how do you use the group blog idea to recruit new contributors? #blogchat @marketingprofs
  • fearlesscomp: I also like the picture and brief (very brief) bio of each blogger. #blogchat
  • collier1960: Once again, participating in #BlogChat is like talking to oncoming traffic. I may have to wait and review the transcript!
  • SabineMcElrath: @collier1960 No need for a big splat to mess up the flow of traffic! Tweet safely! #blogchat
  • SarahNelson_: @dscweb I’ve tried mandatory posts too. Was a big hassle to get quality content. You need passionate contributors to make it work #blogchat
  • TheJoyOfBirth: @fontanians That would be cool. But when we went from 30 to 4 employees. It was impossible and blog just died. #blogchat
  • dscweb: @fontanians We could drop ciontributors, but then we would have to drop them all for not meeting minimum posting requirements #BlogChat
  • mollienothnagel: @georgiacast Yes, exactly. Agree 100% #blogchat
  • AtlantaPR: @GetSweetie absolutely! #blogchat
  • JoeHage: @icebluebanana: not many employees WILL contribute to a company blog #blogchat
  • AtlantaPR: @ICT_GURU Not at all. Each blogger has a different specialty within the company, so that helps to make it work. #blogchat
  • MaryAnnHalford: @JDEbberly May the force always be with you! #Blogchat
  • MarkDykeman: @marketingprofs Ann, with a multi-author blog, do you still need one person who will say “the buck stops here”. #blogchat
  • RLMadMan: @MarketingProfs I believe a company could decide to blog with a passionate voice though, non? #blogchat
  • MaryAnnHalford: @mshahab good question – a lot depends on internal workings of the company #blogchat
  • HoodedMan: @RLMadMan No corporate plan or anything can define that in a any beneficial manner #blogchat
  • sharifwrites: @scullyano I think it’s called for. The lack of mechanics in writing can lead to poor opinion. #blogchat
  • getsweetie: #blogchat One of my clients uses a corporate group model, however they provide an editor for Grammar/flow as part of the perk …not voice
  • Ribeezie: An author signature box w/# of posts RT @AtlantaPR: For multiple author blogs, make sure each post has the authors name on it #blogchat
  • sherrylowry: Are there template collections specializing in group blogging? I know once even for a duo was hard to locate. #blogchat
  • CheeselessMom: here is an example of a group blog: http://bit.ly/d8azAa #blogchat
  • greenlandlady: Me too. RT @fearlesscomp: I also like the picture and brief (very brief) bio of each blogger. #blogchat

  • mshahab: @chrisyates11 what do you mean by team needs fixing not message? #blogchat re: multiple authors can dilute voice
  • pheffernanvt: @colleenpence Couldn’t agree more. Diversity of voice is wonderful; grammar, not #blogchat
  • kionsanders: @colleenpence The incorrect grammar/spelling issue can be solved by assigning one person editorial responsibilities #blogchat
  • RLMadMan: @collier1960 what helps me is to keep an eye on my @ column. I’ll say something, see if anyone responds. Wait. Say something else. #blogchat
  • TobyDiva: @dscweb imho brilliance of mp & ann was there was No mandate or content & # of posts. we just felt guilty if not quality post. #blogchat
  • dscweb: @LauraMattis The group blog I’m talking about works. But the number of posts have dropped from once daily to 1 or 2 per week #BlogChat
  • LauraMattis: @mshahab For our grp blog, we ea have diff/complementary specialties, we each ask a guest for our areas #blogchat
  • LiteraryNobody: @pheffernanvt I was just thinking about this..Mashable has really great writers then some really not great ones..a mixed bag #blogchat
  • colleenpence: @pushingsocial Yes, newsroom model for group blog definitely keeps everyone accountable & quality, regular content goes out. #blogchat
  • getsweetie: #blogchat It truly helps to have not only author bio info but positional information in writers as well….e.g. Scott…who builds great ..
  • ChrisMLindgren: Does anyone invite influencers in your space to guest blog? #blogchat
  • hacool: Each speaks to their own expertise RT @AtlantaPR: @ICT_GURU Not at all. Each blogger has a different specialty within the company. #blogchat

  • Scribnia: Make sure if you bring in guest contributors, that you link to their site and make it clear they’re a guest. #blogchat
  • sherrylowry: So logistically, how does it work to have multiple bloggers. All submit to a central who then posts it? #blogchat
  • chrisyates11: That’s my background so probably why I like that as well. RT @pushingsocial: I like the Newsroom model for multiple author blogs #blogchat
  • lardito: Trying to keep up with #blogchat and tweet for @ywcausa isn’t easy. #blogchat moves so fast & #tweet4ywca has to keep going!
  • philgerb: .@sherrylowry depends. Could use WordPress and have separate logins. Could post as draft and have admin moderate. Many options. #blogchat
  • LiteraryNobody: @CheeselessMom @HoodedMan I am always looking for some obscure ones that have great writing..some of those get no attention #blogchat
  • jesseluna: @fearlesscomp Pics and mini bios are a good idea. But it depends on the bloggers and blog. #blogchat
  • RLMadMan: @HoodedMan sounds like a challenge 🙂 Check out Outspoken Media! #blogchat
  • MarkDykeman: @ianmrountree man, can you imagine a #twchat this active? #blogchat
  • georgiacast: @icebluebanana Interesting. Why do you think so? #blogchat
  • Scribnia: @MarketingProfs do you guys have full time editors? Or can you just have the most committed bloggers do the editing? #blogchat
  • JDEbberly: @MaryAnnHalford Okay – THAT ONE was challenging lol http://j.mp/bN8LSE #Blogchat
  • AtlantaPR: @Ribeezie Nice to see you here Ricardo. How have you been? We are moving the BIG site to rackspace. #blogchat Are you still using them?
  • BillBoorman: @sherrylowry If you use the right platform anyone can post at any time #blogchat
  • fontanians: @TheJoyOfBirth Yeah, I see how that can happen. #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: @TobyDiva Re the Daily Fix, I intentionally don’t mandate a post #. I want contributors to blog when they have something to say. #blogchat
  • CurtMonash: #blogchat Guest posts != group blog. Group blog ==> shared commitment/”ownership:
  • colleenpence: Absolutely. PRT @SarahNelson_ You need passionate contributors to make [group blog] work #blogchat
  • CheeselessMom: AGREE! RT @Partyaficionado: I get asked often to participate in group blogs. The scheduling and assignments just sound like work. #blogchat
  • Sue_Anne: Agree. RT @chrisyates11: Problem with 1 voice is if the person leaves the company then what? #blogchat

  • JoeHage: @LauraMattis meaning you have multiple, reliable contributors? #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: @MarkDykeman Yes – you absolutely do. That’s the editor who is stopping the buck. Who pushes back at stuff that’s crappy. #blogchat
  • ICT_GURU: @sherrylowry Depends on blogging soft. but in general each allocated blog post based on calendar and each one uploads accordingly. #blogchat
  • justprecious: @sherrylowry depends on the platform. Most platforms will allow for authors, editors, admins, etc. each wtih different roles #blogchat
  • KaufmanwithAK: #blogchat you can assign days of the week to different authors if you must, but that tends to decrease passion and quality.
  • vunty: Assuming you can find passionate bloggers, what are some other cons of a group blog? #blogchat
  • hacool: For group blogs I think it’s also nice to have a bio page for each contributor that explains their background/perspective. #blogchat

  • BillBoorman: Im playing around with a microblog which will allow multiple contributors. anyone have experience of this? #blogchat
  • ianmrountree: Man, my Notes From are going to be weak this week. I can’t keep up! #blogchat

  • kwjudd: This is like trying to get on an escalator or jumping into a double dutch jump rope session already in progress tonite! #blogchat

  • LiteraryNobody: @danperezfilms I agree…but there seems always to be some wild cards that forget their purpose in blogging for the company #blogchat
  • SaraBAllen: @georgiacast You can password protect a blog (on blogger) so only users can see it. #blogchat
  • Scribnia: @KevinLyons we fished em in here (= cc @sofresh #blogchat
  • MarkDykeman: @marketingprofs Ann, do group blogs force any particular legal considerations? #blogchat
  • Scribnia: @riyaznet they do a bit of both. Dedicated writers for specific categories, and others that write about different topics. #blogchat

  • MaryAnnHalford: @fearlesscomp what is your secret? #blogchat
  • marketingfails: @fearlesscomp Wow, that’s impressive. What would you say is your #1 inspiration for content? #blogchat
  • alisonlewis: @ICT_GURU good point. What about when people ask you to do a guest post? #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: @ICT_GURU In other words: Being part of the community there. Commenting, commenting back, saying thank you. Simple. But hard. #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: @ICT_GURU Toughest thing = Helping people understand that giving back to a blog is as important as just writing for it. #blogchat
  • eljadaae: @LiteraryNobody Why? Examples? #blogchat
  • chrisyates11: @MShahab I meant if team is not on same page before blogging & it becomes a problem then the message not issue team is #blogchat

  • mshahab: @chrisyates11 that makes sense, thanks for clarifying 🙂 #blogchat
  • LauraMattis: @dscweb About 5, plus 1 guest so far. More guests coming, we are ea tapped w/bringing one on, we ea have unique area of expertise. #blogchat
  • SarahNelson_: @ICT_GURU guest posts can add a lot of value for your regular readers and “texture” to your blog #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: @ICT_GURU Tons of people want to write for the blog. Fewer really want to be part of the community. #blogchat
  • fontanians: @kwjudd Not at all! depends on the ppl – not all corporate is passionless 🙂 #blogchat
  • samudary: @LiteraryNobody I agree, personal and company really should not mix. Although it does depend on what the company is about #blogchat
  • AtlantaPR: @LiteraryNobody Same for twitter. When company accounts tweet corp and personal stuff and change voice it is confusing! #blogchat
  • RLMadMan: @LiteraryNobody Some folks try to meld business with the personal to make them seem more human. If done effectively it works. #blogchat
  • kwjudd: @LiteraryNobody That’s why there should be someone who oversees the company blog re: grammar, tone, message, etc. #blogchat
  • pheffernanvt: @MarkDykeman Great question. @marketingprofs, what do you say about group blogs & special legal issues? #blogchat
  • NicWirtz: @Nicholas_Cardot Doesn’t matter what position in the company you are, you can effect social media policy if persuasive. #blogchat
  • georgiacast: @SaraBAllen Thanks! Didn’t even realize companies did that kind of thing #blogchat
  • Elaine_Fogel: @Scribnia #blogchat I don’t think it’s necessary to assign topics. I would personally find that limiting.
  • ar_turnbull: #blogchat @MarketingProfs yeah, building a community can be extremely difficult. Any advice?
  • pushingsocial: Do you collaborate on a “Passion Statement” to guide group blog contributions? Seem to make sense. #blogchat
  • marketingfails: Exactly. RT @LiteraryNobody: What I hate is when a company blog is partially used as a personal blog #blogchat
  • MackCollier: How many of you write for a group blog? Company or other? #blogchat
  • Scribnia: How much should companie rely on “outside contributors” (as opposed to employees) to provide their blog content? #blogchat
  • ambercleveland: I think corp blogs should be written from the value set, mission/vision/values of the co. whether guest/internal writer #blogchat
  • BillBoorman: i write about 10 guest posts a week. best way to build following #blogchat
  • JPlovesCOTTON: Other SM too RT @thehoneyb: Me too! RT @LiteraryNobody: What I hate is when a company blog is partially used as a personal blog #blogchat

  • greenlandlady: What do people think of guest posts? #blogchat” @alisonlewis I have to do a lot of editing w/ guest posts but still encourage them #blogchat
  • ICT_GURU: @alisonlewis Yep same theory. I pick the offers that I think I can bring REAL value to. and it’s gotta be fun! #blogchat
  • RLMadMan: @danperezfilms True, but a plan beforehand will define what Big Brother does & doesn’t want to see. Better than surprises! #blogchat
  • Scribnia: @Elaine_Fogel but why not let the experts in each category focus on what they know? Then readers get to know them better too. #blogchat
  • kwjudd: @fontanians Yes! That was my point. If no passion, you’re at the wrong company (or you’re wrong for the company). #blogchat
  • CurtMonash: @HoodedMan #blogchat Blogging is a very versatile medium. Not all blogs have to meet your particular personal preferences.
  • samudary: @MackCollier I actually do write for a group. Its very rewarding #blogchat

  • ICT_GURU: @MarketingProfs Thanks Ann! You’re a gem! #blogchat
  • LiteraryNobody: @Samudary True…if it is a company that thrives on a familial aspect in their company in can work otherwise it kills the blog #blogchat
  • SarahNelson_: @Sue_Anne Good group blog/contribution site = @AustinPost #blogchat
  • Scribnia: *raises hand… a few of em RT @MackCollier: How many of you write for a group blog? Company or other? #blogchat

  • LiteraryNobody: @AtlantaPR I totally agree..that’s a major fail…people will not take it seriously #blogchat
  • Scribnia: @BillBoorman impressive! That’s a lot of writing. How do you keep up that pace? #blogchat
  • NicWirtz: @chrisyates11 #blogchat If one person leaves it’s not the end of the blog. Companies need to learn how to spot socmed talent.
  • ICT_GURU: @CubanaLAF That’s Spinksy in there?!? Didn’t realise! #legend #blogchat
  • sharifwrites: @greenlandlady I enjoy reading and writing guest posts. Makes a blog seem less monotonous when you see a new name, face on it. #blogchat

  • ianmrountree: @MackCollier I write (less than I feel I should) for one community blog, as well as my own blog. Big directional difference. #blogchat
  • hacool: @marketingfails @LiteraryNobody – agree. the blog should incorporate the individual personalities, but keep focused on the topic. #blogchat
  • sherrylowry: @MarketingProfs – do you have some sort of guidelines for selecting your community (of bloggers)? #blogchat

  • TobyDiva: @pushingsocial: interesting. what do you mean by a “Passion Statement” to guide group blog contributions? #blogchat
  • getsweetie: #blogchat What is the biggest challenge…making clear what the boundaries are and are not for all writers.
  • danperezfilms: Blog post quality should trump blog frequency. Way too much fluff out there already. Better to blog when you got something meaty. #blogchat
  • JPlovesCOTTON: good ? RT @sherrylowry: @MarketingProfs – do you have some sort of guidelines for selecting your community (of bloggers)? #blogchat
  • thehoneyb: I do! http://bit.ly/b1GJMd RT @MackCollier: How many of you write for a group blog? Company or other? #blogchat
  • BillBoorman: I get lost on the deffinition of a corporate blog. 95% of blogs are corporate #blogchat
  • DelaneyKirk: I really enjoy @profhacker – great example of group blog by educators. http://chronicle.com/blog/ProfHacker/27/ #blogchat
  • SaraBAllen: I used to write for Skirt.com which is a women’s community focused on outreach in a particular city. #blogchat

  • dscweb: So another key would be to only have bloggers with complimentary expertise and keep a tight editorial focus #BlogChat
  • mshahab: Thoughts on submission and approval/editing processes for a group blog? #blogchat @marketingprofs
  • RLMadMan: True! RT @thehoneyb But done badly is painful! @rlmadman Some try 2 meld business with the personal- If done effectively it works. #blogchat
  • mfinsiders: We have a group blog at http://www.multifamilyinsiders.com (several dozen bloggers) #blogchat

  • SaraBAllen: @getsweetie Post submission guidelines? #blogchat
  • RBeale: @GreenLandlady so many benefits of guest posting – new audience can hear your voice/ideas – expand your reach #blogchat

  • BillBoorman: @Scribnia i just write. there is always somthing to write about that fits in #blogchat
  • MarketingProfs: Cultivating community: By IDing people who are active. One of my best tactics is to lurk in the comments, see who’s already there. #blogchat
  • fontanians: Guests posts fine as long as they’re edited for consistency. If not, then “guest post” is simply “inferior post” #blogchat
  • HoodedMan: I could post 5 times a night, but focusing on quality before quantity I’m publishing only 5 times a month http://bit.ly/a3zQoT #blogchat
  • BeckyMcCray: I try to encourage lots of guest posts, to let people tell their own story first hand. #blogchat
  • JoeHage: Just discovered: 88,000 pounds of Mike and Ike candies are made each day. Just so you know. #blogchat

  • ar_turnbull: @marketingprofs what about from the very start – when you have few comments. how do you attract those loyal individuals? #blogchat
  • dscweb: @NicWirtz Excellent point. “Answer feedback questions” or as an editor hand them to the best contributor to respond #BlogChat
  • NicWirtz: @scullyano #blogchat If a guest post on your blog is grammatically incorrect, it needs to be corrected. Reflects bad on writer and host.
  • LiteraryNobody: @thehoneyb LOL so true! #blogchat

  • JPlovesCOTTON: I do company & community RT @MackCollier: How many of you write for a group blog? Company or other? #blogchat
  • BeckyMcCray: I don’t edit guest posts much. It’s their story, so I like to let them tell it their way. #blogchat

  • LiteraryNobody: @BillBoorman True ..no doubt there will be that determination of fit before the request is made #blogchat
