Group Blogs – #blogchat recap and transcript – 07/11/10

#blogchat this week was co-hosted by the marvelous Ann Handley (@marketingprofs on Twitter). Ann is the Chief Content Officer at MarketingProfs and was on #blogchat to talk about starting and managing a group blog.

Company blogs:

One of the great topics of conversations at the beginning of the chat was how to get more involvement by others in corporate blogs. Ann said, “Group vs. single: Group rock for incorporating lots of voices from within a single co., or for aggregating voices outside of it.” There were great suggestions about having an editorial calendar and also someone responsible as an editor to make sure that spelling / grammar are correct. On the topic of editorial calendars, Ann suggested “I think it’s important to maintain an overall editorial calendar/publishing sked. But it depends on the kind of blog.” There was some debate over whether or not everyone participating in a group blog needed to have the same “voice” or if individual bloggers should be encouraged to have their own voice. One company she suggested as doing a great job in this area was Kodak.

Other great tweets:

There were a few dissenting voices about companies having blogs. HoodedMan said, “A blog should be independent. That leaves corporations and their shills out… “

“Social Prospecting”:

During the chat, Ann mentioned a phrase called “social prospecting”. She said, “Cultivating community: By IDing people who are active. One of my best tactics is to lurk in the comments, see who’s already there.” She also said, “Social prospecting can clue you onto motivated contributor who have great energy/passion.”

Other great tweets:

Not just a blogger …

Ann made a great point that in addition to being willing to write posts, participants in the blog needed to also be willing to participate in the community. Ann said, “Being part of the community there. Commenting, commenting back, saying thank you. Simple.” and “Toughest thing = Helping people understand that giving back to a blog is as important as just writing for it. “

Other great tweets:

There was a ton more shared during the evening and the transcript can be found below.
