Blogworld Keynote:
Scott Stratten – @unmarketing

  • Marketing is not a task
    • marketing is every single time you have a potential engagement with someone out there
    • You are the marketing department
    • Your blog is the marketing department
    • Everybody is a marketer
  • People don’t spread meh
  • People spread awesome
  • Stop mistaking blogging frequency for good blogging
  • Blogging on a schedule makes me stabby
  • Blog when you have something to say
  • People pass things around when they are passionate about it
  • If you can blog awesome daily, then do it (They are either MENSA or they’re mental)
  • Blog once a week, blog every other week
  • You never read it later
  • Your job when you write a post is to get it open and get it consumed
  • You hurt your blog if you just “mail it in”
  • Awesome has to stand on its own to get outside your “relationship circle”
  • The reason why people spread things hasn’t changed – they spread emotion and they spread awesome
  • How they spread things has changed
    • Don’t forget about social bookmarks
    • Digg, Reddit, etc.
  • We suck at no. Let’s get better at now.
  • Let’s improve on before first.
  • People spread awesome / social media is talking
  • Lots of things that stop the spread
    • Just using the RSS button and giving it prime real estate. Tons of people don’t know what that means.
      • It’s not my job to tell someone how to consume my product, you just want them to consume it.
    • Have an email signup
    • Mobile – If you do not have your blogs mobile-ready, you are losing readers, losing passalongs and stopping the spread.
    • People shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to read the content on your blog
    • People spread things through social media
    • SEO – Make it SEO after you write the awesome.
      • Passion doesn’t have rules or structure
    • Adwords – Kills your blog because it takes people away from your blog
    • Popups
      • If I start punching you in the face, people will buy from you just to stop you from punching them in the face.
      • Popups when people are leaving your site are liking kicking somebody’s ass when they’re leaving the store.
      • if you want people to sign up, make the sign-up predominant on your page
    • Captchas – You’re ticking off 90% of the people to stop 10% of the problem
    • Blog comment moderation
      • Comment moderation is like throwing people out of the conversation
      • Hinders spreading
      • Stop putting up walls that spread your content
  • Social media success doesn’t exist
    • If your product sucks, being on social media isn’t going to make it better
    • if you hate people, social media is a bad place to be.
    • If you have to use the term “mandatory engagement”, it’s bad place to go.
    • Relationships = business success
    • People do business with people they know, like and trust
    • 80% of the world is morons
    • Too many things on social media
    • YouTube doesn’t make something successful, the video makes things successful.
    • Platforming – choose one platform and make it work
    • You can’t shortcut relationships – Social media doesn’t change the fact that social media takes time
    • 75% of Scott’s tweets have been replies – Conversation points
    • Online networking is not a relacement for in-person networking. You need to do both
    • Social media doesn’t allow you avoid common courtesy
    • Don’t put anything in social media that you don’t want to see on a billboard
    • You’re always marketing
    • You are your brand at the lowest common denomator
    • Don’t have a moron run your social media account
    • If you have someone as a moron running your social media account, it’s not a social media issue, it’s an HR issue
    • It doesn’t matter if you believe in social media, it’s out there and it’s happening
    • If your market is people, you need to be there.
  • For every line you add to your sign-up, you lose people
  • Great Tungle case study
    • DJ Waldow sent out a tungle request, Scott used it, tweeted about it and now it’s lead to a huge relationship
    • People do business with people they know, like and trust
  • Trolls – “Let them hate, as long as they fear”
    • People fear your success
    • It’s easier for them to hate then to realize that they haven’t done anything with their lives
    • So many great people, you don’t need to give your time to the people that are assholes
  • When you are your authentic self, you don’t have to justify yourself to anyone
